OUTDOORS WITH CAPTAIN PERRY
New Year, New Seasons
by Capt. Perry Mendenall

As the new year rolls around, it brings new seasons abound for the Michigan outdoors. Those of you who read my column frequently know how I feel about the vast opportunities we have outdoors in our great state. I hope that 2004 found you trying a new outdoor activity in Michigan. Whether it was canoeing down the AuSable River, or hiking the backwoods in the Pictured Rocks National forest, I hope you all tried something new last year.

For new readers, or old, I challenge all of you to try at least one new outdoor activity this year. You can start right now! Why not try out snow-shoeing or cross-country skiing? How about finding the nearest pack of Beagles and following them around a field or wood lot for a day or two? Or my favorite, find a friend (or guide!) with some ice fishing equipment and hit the hard water! Whichever you choose, the truth is it will be a grand adventure, and will broaden your knowledge plus increase your mental and physical health. I was listening to Pastor Joel Osteen this weekend and he made a statement, which hit right at home. He stated that far too often in this life we are looking ahead to our next promotion, or our busy lives without enjoying the day we have in front of us! As he said so accurately, "the journey is more important than the final destination". Stop for a moment and enjoy today; I'm sure you will find it a great relief from the usual worries of bills, work, kids, etc… Get out and enjoy our great outdoors, I promise you won't regret it!
