Now, let's see how you do with these TravelTrivia Questions. Answers due January 15.

  1. Amish enjoy traveling. Some Amish escape the long Mid-west winters by boarding a bus and taking a long ride to a settlement near Sarasota, Florida. Some stay for several weeks, others for several months. A few live here all year. Instead of horse and buggy, the Amish ride bicycles and tricycles. Instead of worshipping in their homes, they worship in a separate "Amish Church" since their bungalows are too small to accommodate all who attend. Many local Floridians come here to eat at one of two Amish restaurants. Name this Florida winter retreat. (Answer in Sightseers)

  2. In 1836, Michigan delegates wrote Michigan's Constitution even though Congress didn't yet consider it a state. In an attempt to influence Congress into allowing Michigan to be designated as a state, nine counties were named after the then U.S. President's cabinet. His cabinet members included Berrien, Van Buren, Cass, Barry, Eaton, Ingham, Calhoun, and Branch. Two of these, Eaton and Van Buren, were also influential members of his "kitchen cabinet." Name this United States President who was born in the backwoods and left an orphan at 14.

  3. Believe it or not, one of Michigan's official state symbols is soil. This sandy soil, which came to Michigan as a gift of the glaciers that once covered the state, can be found in both the Upper and Lower Peninsulas. This soil was named after the Lower Peninsula County where it was first described. This county, and the town that serves as its county seat, were both named for a Chippewa Indian word meaning either "burned over" or "flat table land." The town is located on the headwaters of the Boardman River and also near the headwaters of the Manistee and Rapid River. These world famous trout streams are the reason why the National Trout Festival is held here. The area also ranks in the top five Michigan counties in Christmas tree sales. Name Michigan's official state soil.

  4. Three things attract people to this Michigan state park-water, hawks and sand. Some come to swim in the warm waters along Crescent Bay. Others come to watch the annual hawk migration across the bay. Still others come to enjoy the largest sand dunes on Michigan's Lake Huron shoreline and the best sand dunes on the entire eastern side of the state. This state park was built in a ghost town that in its heyday had all the amenities of a frontier town-two saloons, one hotel, and stores. Sand made the town prosperous-an endless supply of it formed the basis for its chief business enterprise-the shipping of sand to Detroit for making glass and industrial molds. Henry Ford had tons of the town's sand shipped to Ford Motor Company for use in making the Model-T. Name this Michigan state park.

  5. True or False: Michigan is 60% forested and ranks 5th in the United States in logging and forest products.
