READERS WRITE
First of all, I want to say how much I enjoy your publication. A friend of mine gave me a subscription as part of my Christmas present. I enjoy it so much because that part of the state has always been my favorite part of Michigan. It is my favorite because it meant so much to me when growing up. When I was small my parents would take me up to a place called "Lakeport" and at that time, the highway ran along the lake. Where the road made a slight bend there was a large sign with a Rising Sun on it. The sign read "Sunrise Cabins". They were just little wooden cabins with no running water and had just a bed, small table and two chairs. The owner gave my parents a folding cot for me to sleep on. I thought they were palaces. I was more thrilled to go to Lakeport than kids are today to go to Europe. There was a small building with rest rooms and running water. Right across the street was the beach where I spent hours playing in the lake. I wouldn't trade those memories for all the world. I wonder if any of your readers remember "Lakeport" as I remember it. Sincerely, William J. Johns |
