  2. It all began in Greenville, Michigan, in 1934. Hendrik, a local barber, purchased $338.76 worth of merchandise on credit and opened a grocery store in a vacant building next to his barbershop. Hendrik realized that he had to compete with 22 other grocery stores in town, but he had a plan for making his grocery store profitable. It was a simple one-just give your customers the kind of merchandise, service and prices you would like if you were the customer. And that's what he did. He lowered prices on the products people needed to help them get though the Great Depression. Over the next 16 years, his little Greenville grocery store grew into a small chain of small town supermarkets. In 1962, he opened his first "super store" in Grand Rapids and the rest is history. The family business has since grown to 100 stores located in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky. Name this store.

  3. The following historic events have taken place in Michigan since 1957. Beginning with the earliest, put them in chronological order.
    1. The five-mile long Mackinac Bridge opens.
    2. The Renaissance Center is dedicated in downtown Detroit.
    3. Detroit celebrates its 300th anniversary.
    4. Berry Gordy Jr., founds Motown Records in Detroit.
    5. The Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library in Ann Arbor and the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum in Grand Rapids are dedicated.

  4. Michigan is the only state that touches four of the five Great Lakes. The state's name comes from the Chippewa Indian words mici gama, meaning "great water." Name the Great Lake to which these Indians were referring. It is the only one of the five Great Lakes entirely within the boundaries of the United States.

  5. True or False: In Michigan, you are never more than 6 miles from an inland lake or more than 85 miles from a Great Lake.
