OUTDOORS WITH CAPT. PERRY
Spring Fling
by Capt. Perry Mendenall

It is nearly upon us now. Groundhog or no groundhog, spring is coming. Now as I sit here, it is merely a mirage in my mind since even now close to the "official" spring date it is below zero, and I still have nearly four feet of standing snow in my yard. But, I know it's coming! Time for our cabin fever woes to be whisked away by father sunshine. Time to here those robins singing, the squirrels chatter and the steelies screaming through the rivers.

Spring is truly a grand time of year in Michigan no matter what your bag is. It is obviously one of the premiere fishing times of year. The salmon, trout, and walleye are sought now, more than possibly any other time of the year. It's also just about time to clean up those bikes, motorized or not, roller blades, camping gear or whatever activity you enjoy for Michigan's outdoors. Don't let another spring pass you by without enjoying the outdoors. Many Michiganders are enjoying the benefits of a nice walk, both physically and mentally. Please take time out of your busy schedule for the spring to enjoy a new outdoors activity.

The thing I want to push this month is to get out to a local gun club and enjoy a shooting competition. I will write more on this topic next month, but with the popularity of self-defense and citizens exercising their second amendment rights and carrying concealed pistols, you owe it to yourself, your families and your communities to take that responsibility very seriously. As a competition shooter, as well as a certified NRA pistol instructor, I tell all my classes that the best way to stay in "shape" with their shooting is at your local club shoots. I guarantee you will have a great time as well as improving your skills. Until next month, get a child involved in your outdoor activities; they truly are the future of our heritage!
