WHERE IN AMERICA ARE YOU?
by Randy Karr
The King Kong size glasses you see commemorates Buddy Holly, a legendary Rock
and Roller who was born in the city you are visiting. Among other musicians
with roots, both here and in the state's panhandle, include Waylon Jennings,
Mac Davis, Jimmy Dean, Tanya Tucker, Roy Orbison, Bob Wells, the Gatlin Brothers
and Natalie Maines, lead singer of the Dixie Chicks. This city, located in the
Llano Estacada region, was settled by Quakers and named for a Texas Ranger whose
brother once served as the state's governor. Known as "Hub City",
it is the economic center of the South Plains, a multi-county agricultural region
that contains the largest contiguous cotton-growing region in the world. The
city is also noted for having more churches per capita than any other in the
United States, and for having the tallest building ever to withstand a direct
hit from an F-5 tornado. It is also one of the largest American cities to ban
the sale of packaged alcoholic beverages within its city limits and as the place
where a v-shaped formation of lights, seen over the city, became one of America's
first UFO sightings. Where in America are you, anyway?
