WHERE IN AMERICA ARE YOU?
by Randy Karr
You are visiting America's most famous white house, located west of Washington
D.C. This house gained its notoriety as a filming location for one of the longest
running television series in history. Exterior scenes shot here centered on
the pool area and the covered patio, located on the right side of the house.
Indoor scenes were filmed on a California sound stage, five times larger than
the house you see. The show ran for 13 years, and its 356 episodes attracted
viewers from 95 foreign countries. One particular episode left the audience
of 350 million viewers wondering, "Who Shot J.R?" Because the ranch
remained the residence of J.R. Duncan and his family, filming here was only
done from May through August, so as not to be a distraction to his children during
the school year. A nearby stream that forked into two branches suggested the
name for the ranch. In 1992, a new owner acquired the ranch and the gun that
shot J.R.

Where in America are you, anyway? Name the property, which in 1840,
was a hundred-thousand acre spread, and the nearby north Texas city that boasts
the largest urban art center in the United States and more restaurants per
capita than New York City.
