Dear Janis Stein,

I enjoyed the history of the Port Hope mill that Jim Hunter shared in your May issue and was wondering if you had access to any information or pictures regarding the Greenleaf Elevator, which was located one mile east of M53 on Bay City-Forestville Road. I am also interested in learning more about the Atwater Elevator, which was located two and ½ miles east of M53 on Atwater Road at the railroad crossing (west of Ubly). Anything you could share would be appreciated.

Sincerely, Faithful Reader

Editor's note: Anyone with information regarding Greenleaf Elevator or Atwater Elevator is invited to contact me in care of The Lakeshore Guardian, 9697 Purdy Road, Harbor Beach, MI 48441; e-mail janis@lakeshoreguardian.com; or call 866-479-3448. I will be happy to put you in contact with the Faithful Reader who inquired.

Dear Editor: On May 4th I was informed of the Michigan House Republican plan to provide a $230 increase in the per pupil state funding for our schools in the upcoming school year. Along with this plan is included a proposed $92 per pupil increase to help schools deal with the increasing costs of health care. I strongly support this proposal. This is especially important, in view of the fact, that our schools have received very little extra funding during the past four years due to our state's lagging economy.

In order for our state and schools to remain strong, it is essential that we do all we can to keep education as a top priority. We all know that our children ARE OUR FUTURE. I urge everyone to support this very important legislation.

Sincerely, Ken Micklash
Retired Superintendent of Cass City Public Schools.
