WHERE IN AMERICA ARE YOU?
by Randy Karr
In the city you are visiting is a 3.5-acre, triangular oasis of sanctity called
Thanks-Giving Square. This downtown retreat makes for an unusual but wonderful
Turkey Day destination. The square is dedicated to promoting the concept of
giving thanks as a universal human value. Its centerpiece is the curiously spiraled
Chapel of Thanksgiving that you see nestled below glistening glass skyscrapers.
The chapel is a multicultural shrine to all faiths, honoring the spirit of gratitude
and the global traditions of giving thanks. Light streams into the marble chapel
through an upward spiral of stained-glass panels. The light becomes brighter
and brighter as the ceiling rises toward a central point. Known as the Glory
Window, it symbolizes the blessing of God descending to earth and the ascending
of human praise and gratitude to God. It is also one of the world's largest,
horizontally mounted, stained-glass windows. Among other attractions at Thanks-Giving
Square is a mosaic of The Golden Rule by Norman Rockwell, a Hall of Thanksgiving
where visitors discover what gratitude has meant to the human race and a 14-foot
Ring of Thanks that reminds visitors of the complementary nature of thanks and
giving. Thanks-Giving Square makes this city unique among modern American cities.
Name this city, which is also famous for a park that is home to nine museums
and six performance facilities and for its Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza.
