THE DOCTOR’S CORNER
Sinus Pressure
by Dr. Timothy Grondin

Hi Folks:

Because sinus problems are so prevalent at this time of the year, I've decided to write another article about plants that help even though last month's article was on allergy. The whole point of doing this monthly article is to offer you healthy advice so that you can help yourself without the service of a doctor. In keeping with that philosophy I've decided to list a few of the plants that I routinely use in the office to alleviate painful sinus conditions. I hope this helps you get through the spring season with less discomfort. These plants have worked remarkably well for thousands of patients over the many years I've been in practice.

Bayberry: It's the one I use most often in the office. It doesn't matter if it's an allergy or infection that you're dealing with, Bayberry will often alleviate the pressure in your sinuses. Herbalists often refer to it as "the ole workhorse of the sinus" because it consistently relieves the pressure and will clean out the sinus cavities. Forty to 80 drops in water every four hours is pretty standard dosing.

Horseradish: Ever put horseradish on your eggs in the morning or on your steak at dinner time? What does it do to you? It immediately opens up your sinuses doesn't it? Well it works the same way when you take it as an herbal extract. Let me tell you, if you've got some serious sinus pressure this stuff will provide relief and fast. Often within seconds. I dose it the same way as the bayberry. And it never ceases to amaze me at how fast it can work. The technical literature states that it's antibacterial in nature, and indeed it will kill certain bacteria and eliminate many sinus infections.

For my patients who are in a lot of pain I'll suggest they use both plants at the same time. Forty to 80 drops of each in an ounce or two of water every four hours until they're better. If you're not any better with this protocol after a few days then you may wish to consult a health professional for evaluation of your specific needs.

Hope this helps,
Dr. Grondin
