WHERE IN AMERICA ARE YOU?
by Randy Karr
Unconditional Surrender is the name given to the colossal sculpture you see. The 26-foot-tall statue of a sailor kissing a nurse is based on a famous World War II photograph that became one of the most famous ever published in Life magazine. Alfred Eisenstaedt snapped the photo in Times Square on V-J Day, the day Japan surrendered in World War II. The spot where the kiss took place is on a small island separating Broadway and Seventh Avenue.

In 2005, artist J. Seward Johnson, an heir to the Johnson & Johnson fortune, recreated the iconic photo in aluminum as part of an exhibition featuring large-scale sculptures in this city’s Bayfront Park. Proving that life imitates art, couples romanced by the sculpture come to be photographed as they mimicked the colossal, serendipity smooch. Where in America are you, anyway? Name the Florida city where Unconditional Surrender is located, which is also the city where circus magnate John Ringling and his wife Mable built a renowned art and circus museum.
