TRAVELTRIVIA
QUESTION OF THE MONTH
© 2009 Randy Karr

Deborah Black, Angela Otterbein, David's of Palms and Fred Black correctly answered Interlochen State Park as being Michigan’s first state park. This park borders Interlochen Arts Academy, the nation’s first independent boarding school in the arts and an internationally renowned concert venue. Now, let’s see how you do with this Travel Trivia question. Answer is due November 15.

Michigan’s newest state park, established in 2001, celebrates the 300th anniversary of founding of Detroit in 1701 by Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac. The 31-acre park, still a work in progress, is transforming a blighted industrial waterfront into a green urban oasis. The park’s landmark is a 63-foot light tower, a replica of the Tawas Point State Park lighthouse, which marks the entrance to a recently refurbished harbor of refuge. The tower serves as a tribute to Michigan's Great Lakes maritime history and is thought to be the first conical brick structure of this type built in Michigan since 1892. Future developments in the park will include a demonstration area showing how wetlands act as nature's water filtration system and a memorial to Peter Stroh, who for a quarter century advocated opening Detroit's waterfront for public use. Planned amenities include a bike path, pedestrian pathways and fishing platforms along the riverfront. Name Michigan’s first urban state park.
