WHERE IN AMERICA ARE YOU?
by Randy Karr
You are visiting a temporary memorial honoring those who died when United Flight 93 plunged into a remote Pennsylvania field, about 65 miles southwest of Pittsburgh. By the fence, 40 angels bear names of the 40 passengers and crewmembers that valiantly fought to prevent the terrorist hijackers from crashing the plane into the White House or the U.S. Capitol. The crash site is located near the hemlock trees and American flag you see in the distance.

Here, a permanent Flight 93 National Memorial is now being built. It will be dedicated on the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks, September 11, 2011. When completed, the centerpiece of the 2,200-acre National Memorial will be a circular landform known as the Bowl. Trees encircling the Bowl will direct visitor attention beyond the Bowl to the Sacred Ground, the crash site and final resting place of the passengers and crew. This area will be planted in wildflowers that bloom from spring through fall. Visitors will be able to approach the edge of the Sacred Ground, but not enter. Other attributes of the memorial will include an interpretive center, a tree-lined walkway flanked by 40 memorial groves consisting of 40 trees, one grove for each of the 40 heroes, a chapel tower housing 40 chimes, and a wall where the names of the 40 heroes will be inscribed on a band of white stone.
Where in America are you, anyway? Name the small town that is located two miles south of the crash site and name the mountain range surrounding the Flight 93 Memorial.
