THE DOCTOR'S CORNER
The Fountain of Youth
by Dr. Timothy Grondin
Ah yes, the fountain of youth. Our friend Ponce De Leon, the Spanish explorer, searched high and low throughout the Florida everglades but searched in vain. He was shot in the stomach with a poison arrow and met his untimely demise. But your search for the fountain doesn’t have to be difficult or tragic. It can be found in the tiny grape!
A compound called Resveratrol is present in the skin, seeds and stems of grapes. Scientific research has been done on the benefits of grape polyphenols and anthocyanidins to help support health and offer protection to human blood vessel cells. Resveratrol also provides the same anti-oxidant protection, and it boosts cellular immunity and balances immune system functions.
The secret to anti-aging lies with the Resveratrol found in red wine grapes. Resveratrol has been proven in studies to stimulate the SIRT-1 gene 10-fold. That’s your longevity gene folks! It also enhances cellular productivity. Simply stated, this means your body works better at a cellular level. Several studies have shown that Resveratrol inhibits pro-inflammatory enzymes like Cox 1 and Cox 2. This means it acts like natural Viox or Celebrex. Think less joint pain folks. Resveratrol exhibits anti-carcinogenic properties, cardio protective effects, neuroprotective effects and vascular protective effects. In a nutshell, it protects your heart, blood vessels, and nerves, and it reduces your risk of cancer. And did I mention it stimulates your longevity gene 10-fold?
That’s pretty impressive folks.
In addition Resveratrol has been shown to mimic the effect of caloric restriction. If you didn’t know, science has found that a low calorie or calorie restricted diet increases lifespan. In animal studies, calorie restriction has been shown to increase life expectancy by more than 30 percent. Resveratrol produces a similar response.
So you don’t have to scour the everglades to find the fountain of youth. Take Resveratrol supplements and raise a glass of red wine to our friend Ponce.
One final note: The best Resveratrol supplements have Quercitin added to them as Quercitin increases the activity of Resveratrol.
Yours in Health,
