KNOW THE CAUSE
by Doug Kaufmann

Doug KaufmannQ…Dear Doug, I have read online that taking Diflucan during or after will not prevent/cure a yeast infection. I had a culture test positive for MRSA and was put on Bactrim for two weeks. I always get a yeast infection with an antibiotic. The doctor told me to take it as soon as I feel symptoms.

Will this only make the yeast more resistant? Has the yeast mutated? I am taking a probiotic everyday, but I can assure you, I will get a yeast infection anyway. Is there a right time to take the Diflucan?

Sincerely, Cara

A…Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, is a growing problem in the world today and hypothetically could be due to the non-judicious use of antibiotics. I know that every lab tech and pathologist in America treats “staph” infections with antibiotics, including Methicillin, but none seem to be asking the most logical question: Why are they no longer working? Could it be that these only “appear” to be Staphylococcus aureus infections? Since there are many different strains of Staphylococcus, are we very accurately diagnosing each, or are we routinely handing patients thought to have staph infections a prescription for Methicillin?

If our diagnoses are not based on laboratory reports or are wrong, this might account for MRSA. Have our most potent drugs stopped working, or are our diagnoses simply wrong? Remember, fungal infections elevate white blood counts and cause fevers also. Treating a fungal infection with an antibiotic, in my opinion, is like pouring gasoline on a fire. Soon the infection worsens, and we blame the patient for resisting the medication, without ever once questioning the organism or the diagnosis. Often physicians will allow their female patients one Diflucan 200mg pill at the end of a course of antibiotics. This sometimes works but begs a much larger question of why you get these infections. To avoid the need for prescriptive drugs, I’d begin an exercise program, eat well and take any supplements necessary to curb fungal and/or bacterial overgrowth.

Q…Dear Doug, My son got the flu last month, and after battling a week-long fever, he then ended up with ear infections and bronchitis, which almost turned into pneumonia. With all the hype about H1N1, I was starting to get scared, especially when the prolonged fever and constant cough wouldn’t let up. What can we do about flu prevention and does sterilizing every surface with bleach really help prevent and spread viral infections?

Thanks, Judy

A…I’ve long contended that we don’t “catch” the flu, rather we eat the flu! I don’t believe that it is coincidental that these “viral infections” time-charts coincide perfectly with school vacations, holiday times and lots of cheer, including sugar, sugar and more sugar. If I am correct in my hypothesis, bleach does far less than spoons and forks to curtail the spread of viruses. Many who are faithful to our Phase One Diet have written to me in awe that they have not caught the flu in years, despite the fact that they are aging, yet another in a litany of vulnerabilities that we are told make us more susceptible to the flu.

Although it saddens me deeply that this “Swine Flu” killed some Americans, I remain highly suspect as to the cause of their deaths. By the time you read this response, your son is probably now well once again. Our immune systems are truly amazing and offer each of us a few features that even physicians may not be aware of. Referred to as “immuno-memory” and “Immuno-recognition,” if your son did have the Swine Flu, and has recovered, he is now forever immune to getting it again due to the intricacies of our immune system. Unfortunately, we Americans give far more credence to our pharmaceutical companies than we do our Creator, who had this all figured out long before vaccines were ever developed.

Q…My daughter refuses to eat vegetables, and it has been such a fight for so many years that, wrongly, I gave in and gave up. I sneak pureed veggies into meals when it works (cauliflower in mashed potatoes and carrots in spaghetti sauce etc), but I worry that she’s not getting enough. Could you recommend a chewable vegetable supplement for children? Which company and product should I use? She’s six years old, and also has had fungus on half of her toe nails since birth, which also needs to be addressed. She seems healthy in every other way.

Thanks, Kathy

A…You made me smile as I was reading your question! Ahh, do I remember those days.

I’m hard pressed to find many six-year-olds who enjoy vegetables, Kathy, and that is why I’m a firm believer in breast-feeding during the first year or two of a child’s life. Mothers’ milk provides both great nutrition and transfers immunity to children. During breast-feeding vegetables are very important in a mother’s diet.

Although I’d love to tell you that my children craved vegetables in their youth, such was not the case. As they grew and wanted to spend “stay overs” with their friends we made them a deal. Knowing full well that pizza and soda pop was exclusively on the menu, we approved of their overnight jaunts only if they ate a nice bowl of fresh, organic vegetables beforehand. Of course, they balked, and perhaps scientifically it made no sense (Their friends are all still alive and doing well), but Ruth and I felt better about it feeling that they would at very least have some nutrition in their bodies before the SAD onslaught (Standard American Diet)! As far as chewable vitamins are concerned, Nordic Naturals makes a good one called Nordic Berries. Kids seem to love it and one of the sour coatings is actually a potent antifungal that may help her nails! (800-662-2544, extension 3)

Q…Doug, what your thoughts on these new water ionizers? Thank you, Joe

A…Joe, I deeply respect one pure air and water company that has been at the forefront of purification developments in the past 20 years and will defer answering your question in favor of you speaking directly to them. Their engineer, Tim Kerr recently passed away, but his son, John is steady at the helm. This is a family-run business, and we use their air and water filtration devices both in our home and at our TV studio. You may contact healthy perceptions directly by calling them at 1-888-340-0247 (www.healthyperceptions.com). I want to fully disclose that Healthy Perceptions are advertisers on my TV shows, but other than their advertising fees, no money changes hands and I own no stock in their company.
