REPRESENTATIVE TERRY BROWN
Lighthouse transfer symbol of hard work, perseverance
The recent transfer of ownership of the Harbor Beach Lighthouse to the city after nearly three decades of work is great news for Harbor Beach and a reminder of how hard work pays off. It demonstrates the fact that we accomplish great things when we work together, which should serve as a lesson as we work to rebuild Michigan’s economy and move our state forward.
Having served as a navigational beacon since 1885, the lighthouse has grown into a symbol of Lake Huron, Harbor Beach and life here in the Thumb. City officials, residents and volunteers, and everyone else who worked to preserve this important piece of our identity, deserve a big “thank you.” The lighthouse will now offer the opportunity for our children, as well as tourists and travelers, to learn about the history of the lighthouse and life along Lake Huron dating back to the late 19th century.
In addition to the historical importance, I find the metaphor of the lighthouse to be comforting, as we in Michigan battle through these tough economic times. Just as the lighthouse guides ships across the often unforgiving waters of Lake Huron, the lighthouse serves as a beacon of hope and a reminder that these tough times will come to an end. We must stand strong whatever the weather and we will emerge from this economic storm stronger and with a renewed sense of resiliency and community pride.
Just like navigating through Lake Huron’s sometimes choppy waters, this will not be easy. But if lawmakers, community and business leaders and residents all adopt the same perseverance that went into bringing ownership of the lighthouse to the city, we will be able to work our way through today’s challenges.
By putting partisan politics aside and embracing good ideas no matter what side of the aisle they come from, we can build a stronger Michigan. Those resilient folks who worked for almost 30 years on the lighthouse ownership issue never lost sight of the ultimate goal and greater good for our community. That’s the same attitude I take to Lansing and use to focus on what truly matters – helping small businesses create jobs so that middle-class families can thrive creating a brighter tomorrow for our children.
In the end, the Harbor Beach Lighthouse reminds us of two things: our proud legacy along Lake Huron is worth preserving and that things get done when we work together. I take that same pride to the state Capitol and look forward to continuing to work hard no matter how rough the waters may be. As Lake Huron has taught us, all storms pass and hope and recovery shine like a lighthouse through the darkest of clouds.
