QUESTION OF THE MONTH

Fred Black, Thomas Behm, James D. Osbourn, Deborah Black, and Kathie Sielof correctly answered the Huron River as being the cleanest urban river in Michigan. Now, let’s see how you do with this Michigan Travel Trivia Question of The Month. Answer is due September 15, 2010.
One of Michigan’s most famous views is of a lake nestled in Michigan’s largest undeveloped wilderness. On a clear day, the Apostle Islands are visible 25 miles away. The area surrounding this lake and nearby Mirror Lake are steep volcanic ridges that made the old-growth forest too inaccessible and too expensive to log. Longfellow’s Evangeline described this vast virgin forest of eastern hemlock as the place where “the murmuring pines and hemlocks stood like Druids of eld.” Because conservationists recognized the rarity and value of this mountainous wilderness, it was protected in Michigan’s largest state park. Name this state park that is home to one of the last remaining virgin wilderness tracts in the Midwest, and name the lake in the Carp River Valley that is one of Michigan’s premier scenic attractions.
