Where In America Are You?
By Randy Karr
You are visiting the Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge. The bridge was officially named by the United States Congress to commemorate their dedication to public service. O’Callaghan was a former Governor of the state located at the west end of the bridge. Tillman was a professional football player for the Arizona Cardinals who left the team, enlisted in the army, and later was killed while serving his country in Afghanistan. The 1,900-foot-long bridge spans the Black Canyon, about 1,500 feet south of a dam named for the nation’s 31st president.

The 1,060-foot concrete arches you see support a four-lane highway perched 900 feet above the river. From a protected pedestrian walkway on the north side of the bridge are stunning views of the dam, the canyon and the river below. The bridge, the longest bridge of its kind in the western hemisphere, was built to improve travel times between the states on either side of the river and to reduce the possibility of an attack or traffic accidents at the dam site. Where in America are you, anyway? Name the two states connected by the bridge and name the river it crosses.
