Where in America Are You?
by Randy Karr

You are visiting a Florida town that was renamed by Melvil Dewey, the man who created the Dewey Decimal system used to catalogue library books. Known as The Town of Murals, it is internationally famous for its larger than life murals painted on the sides of 44 buildings. These murals depict the town’s history and the flora, fauna, and endangered species found in the surrounding area. Using a bit of paint, artists hide something in the mural for visitors to find. Hidden in the colorful Caladium Fields mural you see is a baby bird in a nest.

Hidden things to look for in other murals include a spirit man in Prairie Dwells, binoculars in Birding, a scout knife in The Trail to Eagle Scout, smiley faces in The Art of Clowning and an alligator in Airboat. The largest mural, 157 feet long and 30 feet high, is Cracker Trail Cattle Drive where visitors listen to the sound of the cattle drive as cowboys shout and cattle moo while the herd is driven through town. The town is also known as The Caladium Capital of the World, because 95 percent of the world’s caladium plants, with their long lasting, colorful foliage are grown here. Where in America are you, anyway? Name this town, which also boasts a Clown School and more clowns per capita than any other Florida city.
