A PEEK AT THE PAST...
Looking For Help With Identification
by Leonard DeFrain

It was given to me a few years ago by a person who lived just north of the Sand Beach cemetery, located just east of M25, about three miles south of Harbor Beach, Jenks Road.

In the photo it looks like a dock to the left of Jenks Road. In trying to research the picture, I’m not sure it was a dock, but I have been told that a saw mill was in the area at one time. Logs were once loaded onto boats there. According to some information that I received just lately, I was told that there was another dock to the south, beside Rock Falls creek.

Rock Falls had a salt well in 1876 sunk by J. Jenks & Company and was over 700 feet in depth. The capacity was about 50,000 barrels per year. Rock Falls had a post office, starting on June 25, 1867, with Geo. W. Jenks as the first postmaster and operated until November 1875.

I have a lot of history on the breakwall, harbor, lighthouse and Coast Guard, and old pictures taken from glass negatives. If interested in looking it over, stop by my house.
